If you have a disk drive it makes games load faster basically. Good thing to have. I had to de-solder the chip in my C64C, but in earlier revisions I think the chip is socketed. Won't necessarily be in the same location as mine, but if you open it up and have a look around it may help decide if you want to bother or not.
